If Cars Could Talk (Virtual)- Tacoma Speedway, America’s Grand Board Track

October 13, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Each day Pierce County drivers pass along part of a once-grand racetrack and don’t even know it. The Tacoma Speedway operated between 1912 and 1922 on a track that looped through what is now Lakewood’s commercial core. It rivaled the best tracks in the country and offered the largest purses in hopes of drawing racers to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. America’s top drivers, including Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ralph DePalma, Gaston Chevrolet and Jimmy Murphy, raced at Tacoma, and their lap speeds there rivaled those at the Indianapolis Speedway.

The legacy of Tacoma Speedway is largely lost to history, but you can learn about the Speedway, the men and their machines at the first Virtual If Cars Could Talk on October 13!

This event will be presented via Zoom and pre-registration is required. Please use the link below to RSVP for this event. Registration will close at 12pm the day before the event.

There are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month, our speaker will pick a car or automotive topic and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us on the second Tuesday of each month, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators, staff or local personalities.

If Cars Could Talk is FREE for ACM Members and is also included with Museum admission.
