SUMMARY:Drive with Pride: Clay Day at LeMay
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, clay modeling has been used as an integral part of the automotive design process. Every company from GM to Tesla still uses clay modeling today\, and Ford Motors has estimated that its design team uses upwards of 2\,000 pounds of clay designing just one vehicle! \nLeMay – America’s Car Museum is thrilled to host Drive with Pride: Clay Day at LeMay! Artist in residency at Olympia’s Artbutus Folk School\, Liz Mauro (they/ them) will be teaching a one-night clay sculpting event for participants to design and sculpt their very own car. Guests are invited to arrive early and enjoy beverages and snacks from 4 pm – 5 pm in the Showcase Gallery\, before our lesson and sculpting begin at 5 pm. \nAll sculpting must be done during this one-night event. Once the pieces dry and are fired\, participants are invited to return with a guest\, approximately 2-3 weeks following the event to pick up their pieces. \nRegistration includes full Museum access\, drinks & snacks\, clay sculpting lesson\, all necessary materials\, and firing & finishing of car sculptures (to be picked up at a later date.) SUMMARY:ACM Virtual Book Club - Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying\, Driving\, and Fixing Cars
DESCRIPTION:Join America’s Car Museum as we read Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying\, Driving\, and Fixing Cars by Katherine J. Parkin. “In Women at the Wheel\, Katherine J. Parkin illuminates the social implications of [the stereotypes that portray [women] as uninterested in automobiles and\, more perniciously\, as poor drivers] and shows how they have little basis in historical reality. With chapters on early driver’s education and licensing programs\, and on buying\, driving\, and caring for cars\, she describes a rich cast of characters\, from Mary Landon\, the first woman ever to drive in 1899\, to Dorothy Levitt\, author of the first automotive handbook for women in 1909\, to Margie Seals\, who opened her garage\, “My Favorite Mechanic . . . Is a Woman\,” in 1992.” \nWe are especially excited to announce that the author\, Katherine J. Parkin will be joining us for our discussion! \nThe discussion and Q & A will take place on Zoom\, March 7th at 6pm. \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY! \nThis book is available on Kindle and print. \nPurchasing your copy via this LINK and receive 30% off using the code PRKNWATW30. Additionally\, the Education Resource Center has copies to lend\, please email education@americascarmuseum.org to arrange checkout.

SUMMARY:ACM Book Club -- Faster by Neal Bascomb
DESCRIPTION: Join America’s Car Museum as we read Faster by Neal Bascomb\, the true story of a banned Jewish race car driver seeking to upset the Nazis’ attempt at winning the Grand Prix. As Nazi Germany launched its campaign of racial terror and pushed the world toward war\, three unlikely heroes—a driver banned from the best European teams because of his Jewish heritage\, the owner of a faltering automaker company\, and the adventurous daughter of an American multimillionaire—banded together to challenge Hitler’s dominance at the Grand Prix\, the apex of motorsport. \nWe are especially excited to announce that the author\, Neal Bascomb\, will be joining us for our discussion! \nThe discussion and Q & A will take place on Zoom\, February 28th at 6pm. \nREGISTER HERE \nThis book is available on Kindle\, audio\, and print. \nPurchasing your copy via this LINK will benefit the Museum. Stay for one or both of the sessions\, and leave with some creative ideas to incorporate into your classroom! SUMMARY:ACM Book Club--The Brown Bullet by Bill Poehler
DESCRIPTION:For our inaugural read\, we’ll be discussing the life of Dewey Gatson\, aka Jack de Soto\, aka Rajo Jack\, a West Coast outlaw racer in the 1920s. Despite being an outstanding driver and creative mechanic\, he was barred from AAA sanctioned races which were strictly segregated at the time. In The Brown Bullet\, journalist Bill Poehler uncovers the life of a long-forgotten trailblazer and the great lengths he took to even get on the track\, showing ultimately how Rajo Jack proved to a generation that a black man could compete with some of the greatest white drivers of his era\, winning some of the biggest races of the day. \nWe are especially excited to announce that the author\, Bill Poehler\, a journalist and racing enthusiast from Oregon\, will be taking part in the book discussion and available to answer questions participants may have. \nThe discussion and Q&A will take place virtually via Zoom on November 16 at 6:00 pm. Register for free online to receive the link. \nREGISTER HERE\nThis book is available on Kindle\, Audiobook\, and as a hardcover print book. Additionally\, the Education Resource Center at ACM has two copies available to lend. Please email education@americascarmuseum.org to arrange checkout
