SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - Racing in South Puget Sound: Shelton and Bremerton
DESCRIPTION:Ken Miles\, Carrol Shelby\, Phil Hill\, Parnelli Jones. All iconic\, internationally known 1950s sports car racers\, and each of them raced here on south Puget Sound courses in the 1950s. \nShelton and Bremerton hosted these famous drivers and their equally famous cars: Ferraris\, Maseratis\, Jaguars\, Mercedes-Benz and all the rest\, over a seven-year stretch that saw thousands of fans from all over the northwest gather at these two locations. They saw world-class competition from famous cars and drivers\, as well as equally close and exciting competition between local drivers like Pete Lovely\, Ray Rairdon\, Don Jensen and Tom Carstens. \nEach year during the 50s\, national or west coast championship races were held at the airports at Shelton or Bremerton\, as well as dozens of local races. The sport of road racing was growing by leaps and bounds in those years\, far surpassing the popularity of NASCAR and even Indy cars. \nRoad racing historian Martin Rudow\, who first attended races at Bremerton in 1956\, will take us back to those exciting days of yesteryear with personal stories and collected anecdotes from the men and women who were part of the excitement. Rudow has collected hundreds of rare photos as well and will share them with us in this live presentation. \nThis event will be presented via Zoom and pre-registration is required. Please use the link below to RSVP for this event. Registration will close at 12pm the day before the event. \nRSVP NOW\nThere are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month\, our speaker will pick a car or automotive topic and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us on the second Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff or local personalities over lunch. \nIf Cars Could Talk is FREE to the public. SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk (Virtual)- Tacoma Speedway\, America's Grand Board Track
DESCRIPTION:Each day Pierce County drivers pass along part of a once-grand racetrack and don’t even know it. The Tacoma Speedway operated between 1912 and 1922 on a track that looped through what is now Lakewood’s commercial core. It rivaled the best tracks in the country and offered the largest purses in hopes of drawing racers to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. America’s top drivers\, including Barney Oldfield\, Eddie Rickenbacker\, Ralph DePalma\, Gaston Chevrolet and Jimmy Murphy\, raced at Tacoma\, and their lap speeds there rivaled those at the Indianapolis Speedway. \nThe legacy of Tacoma Speedway is largely lost to history\, but you can learn about the Speedway\, the men and their machines at the first Virtual If Cars Could Talk on October 13! SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - 100th Anniversary of Bentley Motor Cars: 1919 to 1931\, The Cricklewood Years
DESCRIPTION:100 years ago\, Walter Owen Bentley established Bentley Motors Limited. It took him two licks of founding the company to manufacture the first Bentley\, but once produced\, people quickly learned that if you wanted to own the fastest\, best handling street car\, you got a Bentley. Every model Bentley made won Le Mans at least once. Costing between 5 to 17 Cadillacs each\, even the folks at Downton Abby would have had to settle for a 3 Liter not a 6 1/2 Liter. \nThe “real” Bentley company lasted until 1931 when Rolls Royce bought control of the company out from under W.O. (W.O. Bentley was called W O by his friends). The aim was to destroy a rival\, but the very rich and devoted Bentley owners fought and won to save all the parts\, plans and jigs to maintain their cars in the Bentley Drivers Club. \nJoin us as guest speaker and Bentley owner and enthusiast\, Walt Carrel\, honors the 100th anniversary of Bentley Motors Limited\, highlighting the rise of these timeless vehicles\, the story of W.O Bentley himself\, the Bentley Boys\, and everything in between. \nThis event is FREE for ACM Members and included with Museum admission. Bring a lunch\, or enjoy a meal from Classics by Pacific Grill.

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - Racing in Tacoma
DESCRIPTION:When you think about auto racing in America\, what city comes to mind? Indianapolis? Daytona? What about Tacoma? \nIn 1912\, America’s fastest drivers competed for a national championship at a five-mile long dirt track known as the Tacoma Speedway. The speedway was rebuilt as America’s “grand board track” in 1915 and speed records fell. In 1920 there were two great racetracks in the country: Tacoma Speedway and Indianapolis. Tacoma Speedway was the fastest. Tacoma’s racing heritage was reborn in 1986 when racers roared out of the Tacoma Dome and blasted down East 25th Street in the Tacoma Grand Prix. \nWant to hear more about Tacoma’s racing history? Join us for If Cars Could Talk on January 8th! \n  \nThere are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month\, our speaker will pick a car and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us the second Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff\, or local personalities over lunch. \nThis event is FREE for ACM Members and included with Museum admission. Bring a lunch\, or enjoy a meal from Classics by Pacific Grill.

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - Microcars
DESCRIPTION:The microcar was a product of necessity. In the wake of World War II\, people needed to get around\, but resources to build\, buy and operate cars were scarce. As Europe and Japan rebuilt after the war\, microcar manufacturers cranked out a diverse range of tiny\, weird\, utilitarian people-movers. The roster of microcar makers includes familiar marques like BMW and Subaru\, but also the forgotten names of Zundapp\, Berkeley\, Teilhol and Heinkel. Join us and learn more about the tiny cars that look like they’d fit right into Richard Scarry’s illustrations of cute\, round vehicles. \nThere are many chapters to the story of the automobile. \n

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - DeLorean: The Man and the Car
DESCRIPTION:John Zachary DeLorean (1925-2005) started his career as the head of research at Packard in the early 1950s\, and by 1969\, the handsome and brash executive seemed to be on his way to the top job at General Motors when he decided to do his own thing. In 1974\, John DeLorean established the DeLorean Motor Car Co. in Northern Ireland and began plans for the now famous DMC12. \nThe DMC12 went into production at the end of 1980 but the roll out of the resulting gull-winged\, stainless steel car was disappointing and the beginning of a series of misfortunes that ultimately led to the fall of both the DeLorean Motor Car Company and the man himself. Today the DMC12 exists primarily as an American icon\, gaining movie stardom in the 1980s film Back to the Future. Join us as Museum Educator and Docent\, Charles Smith\, shares the story of John Zachary DeLorean and his motor car company. \nThere are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month\, our speaker will pick a car and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us the second Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff\, or local personalities over lunch. \nFree\, with Museum admission.
