SUMMARY:Family STEAM Days - Renewable Energy Cars featuring MI Elements
DESCRIPTION:The use of renewable forms of energy is a major focus for today’s engineers\, especially within the automotive world. Wind power is one of the simplest and least expensive sources of renewable energy. Today we’ll be using craft supplies and recycled materials to design\, build and race wind-powered model cars\, as we explore how wind power may be utilized in real-world applications. \nToday the ACM Education team will be joined by MI Elements\, an urban off grid lifestyle powered by Fuel From Water Technology. MI Elements will be displaying the only hydrogen-powered vehicle registered in the state of Washington and sharing information about how water can be used to create MI Energy and in turn be able to power every aspect of life\, including vehicles. Currently MI Elements is building the first of their MI Homes\, powered solely by clean\, water-based energy. Stop by to learn more about hydrogen fuel cells and their function as alternatives to fossil fuels! \nDesign\, build\, tinker and learn together as you explore the world of automobiles and its relation to science\, technology\, engineering\, art and math on Family STEAM Day. On the third Saturday of each month\, you and your child\, grandchild\, or family can spend quality time together exploring activities available in the Education Studio and Family Zone. \nFamily STEAM Days are free for ACM Members and is also included with Museum admission. SUMMARY:ACM Virtual Book Club - Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying\, Driving\, and Fixing Cars
DESCRIPTION:Join America’s Car Museum as we read Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying\, Driving\, and Fixing Cars by Katherine J. Parkin. “In Women at the Wheel\, Katherine J. Parkin illuminates the social implications of [the stereotypes that portray [women] as uninterested in automobiles and\, more perniciously\, as poor drivers] and shows how they have little basis in historical reality. With chapters on early driver’s education and licensing programs\, and on buying\, driving\, and caring for cars\, she describes a rich cast of characters\, from Mary Landon\, the first woman ever to drive in 1899\, to Dorothy Levitt\, author of the first automotive handbook for women in 1909\, to Margie Seals\, who opened her garage\, “My Favorite Mechanic . . . Is a Woman\,” in 1992.” \nWe are especially excited to announce that the author\, Katherine J. Parkin will be joining us for our discussion! \nThe discussion and Q & A will take place on Zoom\, March 7th at 6pm. \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY! \nThis book is available on Kindle and print. \nPurchasing your copy via this LINK and receive 30% off using the code PRKNWATW30. My cars have to have great lines\, styling & elegance…but most of all\, they have to have attitude.” Rick Dore customs are highly sought after at auction\, and a toy line has been modeled after several of his designs. As Metallica’s James Hetfield puts it\, “When it comes to building a Kustom car\, Rick Dore is in a league of his own.” One Seattle-based hot rod writer declares\, “Rick Dore has a restless and inventive spirit. He reaches out and goes where nobody has ever gone before.” \nAwards List:\nThe Quail Custom Coachwork\nFord Design awards\nGM design award\nHarry Bradley Design award\nAl Slonaker memorial award\nBlack Gejeian award\nSam Barris Memorial award\nCustom of the Year Awards\nAmerica’s Most Beautiful Awards\nCustom D’Elgance award\nRodeo Drive D’Elgance award\nManuel Arteche Memorial award\nCommodores Award\nGeorge Barris Kustom D’Elegance award \nHall of Fame:\nGrand National Roadster Show\nLegends of the Autorama\nKKOA\nWest Coast Kustoms \nMedia:\nDiscovery Channels TV Show – Lords of the Car Hoarders 1st year then\nRusted Development 2nd year\nJay Leno’s Garage NBC 1 episode S4 E9\nNumerous Podcasts \n“I have always loved cars\, especially customs\, prototypes and coach built cars. Initially\, I took on my own projects out of the love and desire to create and modify my own automotive visions. \nThese early projects\, like my ’57 Buick Lavender Persuasion and my ’53 Buick Breathless really took on lives of their own and were incredibly well received. They showed me there could be more to this work and passion\, that I could be creative\, push things further and explore my ways to enhance these cars given to us by Detroit. \n[French] influences and a creative eye continued to drive me to do more and take chances\, and really allowed me to find and create my own style.\nI have been blessed to partner with some daring clients\, collaborators and  friends that in many ways allowed and even encouraged me to create\, design and build works of rolling art\, to be-able to create one of a kind cars that I dare say rival those of my early coach builder and customizing influencers is a dream come true. \nAs my career and projects evolved and progressed it always reminded me of how fortunate I was to have had the opportunity & privilege to work with an exceptional team\, individual craftsmen and artists. I owe each and every one of them my thanks and appreciation.” – Rick Dore \n

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk--Ross Reynolds discusses the History of Radio in the Automobile
DESCRIPTION:Although we live in a visual world\, audio still has the power to create intimacy and spark the imagination like no other medium can. Veteran broadcaster Ross Reynolds explores the impact that audio transmission has had on society and storytelling\, beginning with the first century of radio up to the modern age of audiobooks\, internet streaming\, podcasts\, and smart speakers. How has audio transmission changed society\, and what makes it such a still powerful form of communication? Ross also explores the impact of radio on car culture. \nAttendees will be encouraged to share stories of their formative audio experiences\, and local radio broadcasters and podcasters will be invited to share their stories. \nRoss Reynolds (he/him) is an interviewer\, moderator\, and convener. He recently served as KUOW’s executive producer for community engagement\, before which he was a program host for 16 years. His awards include the 2011 Public Radio News Directors First Place in the call-in category for Living in a White City. In 2015\, he was named to the University of Washington Communication Alumni Hall of Fame. \nThis lecture is provided in partnership with Humanities WA.
