SUMMARY:Family STEM Day - Crash Test Contraptions
DESCRIPTION:Design\, build\, tinker\, and learn together as you explore the world of automobiles and its relation to science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. On the third Saturday of each month\, you and your child\, grandchild\, or family can spend quality time together exploring activities available in the Education Studio and Family Zone. \nLearn how cars are designed to keep us safe. Create a vehicle to use in our variation of the traditional egg drop experiment. \nAfter your experience at the Museum\, head down to Foss Waterway Seaport for their Steam Weekend – they are thrilled to welcome back the Northwest Steam Society who will bring a collection of their steamers to moor at the Seaport’s dock. The boat owners plan to share their steamers with Museum guests\, demo and explain how they work\, plus answer all your “steam” questions. They will provide plenty of steam whistle sounds to support this event. If you have never seen these delightful boats\, now is the time to come to the Seaport…they are amazing! Some lucky museum visitors will enjoy a short cruise! Free with paid admission to the Seaport. More details on the event here.

SUMMARY:Cleworth: Cars\, Art & Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit extended through end of year! \nIn celebration of Tacoma’s Art Month\, LeMay-America’s Car Museum is honored to showcase renowned artist\, Harold Cleworth.  Known as the “painter laureate of the car”\, his trademark “super realism” paintings grace the homes of celebrities along with car and art enthusiasts.  His talent has garnered commissions from car companies\, the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance\, and automotive legends including John DeLorean. \nHis passion to create has yielded an illustrious career.  After attending Manchester College of Art he worked as a graphic artist at Decca Records designing album covers for the Rolling Stones and the Who.  In the early 1970s he switched gears and followed his lifelong interest in automobiles\, moving to San Francisco to paint his passion.  At the start\, he traded his artwork for rent. When Richard Rubin\, San Francisco car dealer\, commissioned Cleworth to paint a Mercedes Gullwing\, his career kicked into high speed.  His works are now highly sought after as he only paints 6 or 7 works a year  and creates limited edition lithographs of his original art work.  CLEWORTH: An ARTFULLlife was just released this summer to capture his lifetime of achievement. \nDuring the month of October\, the Museum will exhibit a selection of his works\, host a special student presentation (October 9)\, and hold a public lecture (October 10).  This celebration of Cleworth’s love affair with cars and art is not only a unique opportunity for our region but also a benefit to LeMay-America’s Car Museum Education Program.  In the month of October there will be a sale of his limited edition 1968 F1 312 Ferrari lithographs to support our Museum’s educational efforts.  In addition\, he will sign the prints and his book at a public lecture at the Museum on October 10 from 2-4pm\, both of which will be on sale in our Museum Store. \nLeMay-America’s Car Museum’s is delighted to bring Harold Cleworth to be a part of Tacoma Art Month. When asked to sum up his best advice about to about his inspiring career Cleworth said\, “Do what you love.”  The show of his artwork and his lectures will paint this picture\, and all its hard work and determination\, to inspire all of us. \n\nFree\, with admission.

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk: Automobile Customization
DESCRIPTION:There are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. \nEach month\, our speaker will pick a car and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us the first Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff\, or local personalities over lunch. \nThere is no better barometer for trends in society than a custom car. From its inception\, the automobile has been a favored platform for free expression. The inspiration for modifications is as much a reflection of cultural identity as it is a need to fulfill a practical challenge. \nCome hear ACM’s Curator of Exhibitory Scot Keller and Jason Rushforth\, president of Rushforth Wheels in Tacoma\, discuss old and new trends in automotive customization.

SUMMARY:American Muscle - Modified Madness Exhibit Opens to Public
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand”¦with a twist”¦based on the enthusiastic response we’ve received from thousands of visitors\, the American Muscle exhibit has been extended with an entirely new set of muscle cars in American Muscle – Modified Madness. Modified Madness is about “restomod” muscle cars from 1964 – 1972 that have been contemporized in appearance and/or performance. \nThe story of the American muscle car started with John Z. DeLorean when he imagined an untapped market for young people looking for ever-increasing power and performance. The 1964 Pontiac GTO became the first salvo from General Motors in a performance and horsepower war that waged until the onset of the environmental regulations in the early 1970’s. \nBut the story didn’t end there. Great muscle cars from this era are arguably “the” vehicle of choice amongst “Restomod” custom car builders today. Restomod\, cars are that have been contemporized in appearance and/or performance\, are the latest expression in the Hot Rod tradition.

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk – Early Duesenberg: The Little Engine that Could & Other Innovations
DESCRIPTION:There are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month\, our speaker will pick a car and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us the first Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff\, or local personalities over lunch. \nMany people\, if they’ve heard of Duesenberg\, think of the fast and flashy cars owned by the rich and famous in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Before that\, however\, the Duesenberg brothers had a long history of design and development of high performance engines and vehicles used with considerable success on early race tracks\, including multiple wins at Indianapolis 500. Guest speaker Greg Camp will explore this innovative period for the Duesenberg brothers before the famous J and SJ models. \nFree\, with admission. Bring your own lunch or enjoy a meal from Classics by Pacific Grill at ACM.
