SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - Racing in Tacoma
DESCRIPTION:When you think about auto racing in America\, what city comes to mind? Indianapolis? Daytona? What about Tacoma? \nIn 1912\, America’s fastest drivers competed for a national championship at a five-mile long dirt track known as the Tacoma Speedway. The speedway was rebuilt as America’s “grand board track” in 1915 and speed records fell. In 1920 there were two great racetracks in the country: Tacoma Speedway and Indianapolis. Tacoma Speedway was the fastest. Tacoma’s racing heritage was reborn in 1986 when racers roared out of the Tacoma Dome and blasted down East 25th Street in the Tacoma Grand Prix. \nWant to hear more about Tacoma’s racing history? Join us for If Cars Could Talk on January 8th! \n  \nThere are many chapters to the story of the automobile. If cars could talk\, they might just share stories we never imagined. Each month\, our speaker will pick a car and offer a fascinating peek into its history. Join us the second Tuesday of each month\, and explore the story of cars with Museum curators\, staff\, or local personalities over lunch. \nThis event is FREE for ACM Members and included with Museum admission. Bring a lunch\, or enjoy a meal from Classics by Pacific Grill.

SUMMARY:National Police Week
DESCRIPTION:In 1962\, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. In honor of 2019 National Police Week  (May 12 to 18)\, ACM is offering members of law enforcement and first responders a $2 discount on regular adult Museum admission when they show their badge/credentials. \nTo celebrate 2019 National Police Week\, the Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum will take the wraps off a restored\, 1949 Ford Washington State Patrol Car at America’s Car Museum on May 14 at 4pm on the Anderson Plaza. \nThis 1949 WSP Ford “Shoebox” sedan is considered historically significant as the vehicle represents one of the first police package vehicles produced by a manufacturer\, coming factory-equipped with a powerful Ford “Flathead” V-8 engine\, heavy-duty brakes\, 16″ wheels\, a spotlight and a steel reinforcement plate on the roof to accommodate lights or large antennas. You can see the police radio installed under the dash\, and the siren is installed inside the engine compartment.  The Police Museum acquired the “Shoebox” in 2013 and the frame-off restoration began shortly thereafter with the assistance of skilled volunteers\, community members\, businesses and organizations. This is the most extensive restoration project the Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum has ever undertaken. All of the Police Museum’s original patrol vehicles are owned by the Police Museum and no public funding is used to restore these cars. \nThis will be the car’s first exhibit to the public following its restoration. The Police Museum‘s guest of honor at the unveiling will be 93 year-old retired WSP Trooper\, Fred Schenk – who began his career with the WSP in 1947 and was issued this 1949 Ford patrol car. \nThe car will be on display in the ACM lobby through Father’s Day weekend.

SUMMARY:If Cars Could Talk - 100th Anniversary of Bentley Motor Cars: 1919 to 1931\, The Cricklewood Years
DESCRIPTION:100 years ago\, Walter Owen Bentley established Bentley Motors Limited. It took him two licks of founding the company to manufacture the first Bentley\, but once produced\, people quickly learned that if you wanted to own the fastest\, best handling street car\, you got a Bentley. Every model Bentley made won Le Mans at least once. Costing between 5 to 17 Cadillacs each\, even the folks at Downton Abby would have had to settle for a 3 Liter not a 6 1/2 Liter. \nThe “real” Bentley company lasted until 1931 when Rolls Royce bought control of the company out from under W.O. (W.O. Bentley was called W O by his friends). The aim was to destroy a rival\, but the very rich and devoted Bentley owners fought and won to save all the parts\, plans and jigs to maintain their cars in the Bentley Drivers Club. \nJoin us as guest speaker and Bentley owner and enthusiast\, Walt Carrel\, honors the 100th anniversary of Bentley Motors Limited\, highlighting the rise of these timeless vehicles\, the story of W.O Bentley himself\, the Bentley Boys\, and everything in between. \nThis event is FREE for ACM Members and included with Museum admission. Bring a lunch\, or enjoy a meal from Classics by Pacific Grill.
